April 13, 2020
The Desert locust invasion has been predicted during the GU season of 2020 in Somalia as it was last year when the Desert locust invaded mainly the Northern and Central part of the country and announced as a National emergence due to its impacts. Despite recent intensification of control operations in the affected zones of Somalia, it is expected breading continuation of the 1st and 2nd generation after the onset of Gu' season.
The country is already facing significant challenges for the fighting of COVID-19 caused by the Coronovirus due to low capacity, lack of standard health infrastructure with low public health awareness therefore it will be more disastrous if the desert locust outbreak again as forecasted. Early action is urgently needed to reduce the risks and avoid more mortality and economic loss.
