Somali Natural Resources Research Center

Somali Natural Resources Research Center (SONRREC) is a non-profit and independent research organization that was established in 2016 with the objective to manage, protect and shape the country’s natural resources in a sustainable manner by improving the economic well being and eradicate the poverty through evidence based scientific research, capacity development and consultancy services.

Director of finance

Having been in the Financial Industry since 2007, Mohammed Derow has extensive experience in the industry. As director of finance for the Somali Natural Resources Research Center, his 15 years of finance experience were an ideal foundation.

In his working history, he was mostly involved with financial reporting, fraud investigation, budgeting, compliance management, and many other responsibilities.

Mohammad has worked with several multi-million-dollar, profit, and not-for-profit entities, including SIMAD University, Danish Refugee Council, Concern Worldwide, Olympic Petroleum Ltd. Kush Bank for Agricultural Development, Business Fit International, and CEVA Logistics in different countries, including Somalia, South Sudan, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Canada.

Mohammed holds an MBA with a specialization in Strategic Management from Kenyatta University, an undergraduate degree in Accounting from SIMAD University and he is currently studying for a post-graduate diploma in financial compliance from Seneca College in Toronto, Canada.

Dr Ibrahim  has done his first degree in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Gedarif University, Sudan. He has then pursued his post-graduate studies in Khartoum, where he earned a master’s degree in 2012.Ibrahim then studied in the Division of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences, School of Biosciences at the University of Nottingham, completed a PhD in soil sciences (2015-2020).Ibrahim has been a passionate researcher in environmental soil chemistry for more than 10 years. He is also an experienced Lecturer at different Universities in Mogadishu such as the Somali National University and Benadir University..

Ibrahim uses his expertise in the geochemistry of stable and radioactive isotope tracers (e.g., 77Se and 129I) to help understand selenium and iodine movement into soil and water systems. His research focuses on investigating the mechanics that control trace nutrients (e.g., selenium and iodine) in soil-plant-human systems. His research explores, for the first time, selenium and iodine status in Somali Agricultural soils, crops, irrigation water and drinking water.

Ibrahim is an active member of numerous scientific committees and societies, including the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC), Royal Society of Statistics (RSS), British Soil Sciences Society (BSSS) and Environmental Geochemistry and Health (SEGH) early career researchers (ECRs). Currently, Ibrahim is working with a multi-organizations project to investigate the potential of biofortification to reduce zinc and iron deficiencies in Pakistan (Funded Value: £1,676,210; Funded Period: Apr 19 – Mar 22; Funder: BBSRC).

Director of Capacity building

Mohamed Dayib Abubakar is Co-founder and former executive director of Somali Natural Resources Research Center SONRREC, presently he is dean faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Science at Jazeera University. In addition, he studied BSc and MSc at Sudan University of Sudan Science and Technology Faculty of Agricultural studies, department of plant protection entomology (2001- 2007); similarly, he worked as an assistant entomological lab technician at Sudan University.

Mr. M. Dayib worked as a lecturer at different Universities in Somalia specifically Benadir University, Somali University and Zamzam University. He publicized different articles related his field and natural resource sectors,. Mr. M. Dayib pioneered Land Restoration & Re-Greening Project in Somali, which is jointly implementing by SONRREC and Jazeera University.
